Belly Breathing (Diaphragmatic Breathing)

Belly breathing (also known as diaphragmatic breathing) is a slow breath where you breathe into your belly, not your chest. As you breathe in, air fills your belly as it expands. As you breathe out, air leaves your belly as it contracts. Follow the panda as a guide.

Hands on your belly

1Sit tall or lie back. Rest both hands on your belly, just below your ribs (or one hand on your chest and one on your belly).
2Breathe in through your nose, and let your hands rise. Your chest and shoulders stay quiet.
3Breathe out slowly and feel your hands move as your belly contracts. This is a steady breath with no holds. The panda's belly shows the rhythm.

How it can help

Breathing into your belly uses your diaphragm, the muscle your body is designed to breathe with.
